Our future plans include creating skincare products as well as soaps, as caffeine can be applied to rejuvenate skin and help wake you up in the morning. Other products include coffee-scented shampoos and conditioners to encourage a natural alternative to traditional hair products. We believe in educating the community in proper ethical waste disposal. Our compost will help aid in the teaching of environmentally friendly agriculture methods, while producing a range of herbs and vegetables. The disposal of food waste in landfill estimates to costing the Australian economy $20 billion yearly. If the community partake in this initiative, this number well drop significantly. |
What do we do?Coffee Grounds Gippsland is a social enterprise run across Gippsland. Our goal is to collect and recycle used coffee grounds from cafés and food venues that serve coffee across Gippsland.
The coffee grounds gathered are used on our community compost as fertiliser to help grow a number of different vegetables and herbs. Our goal is to eliminate food waste in Gippsland by 2025 from the hospitality industry. It is currently the major contributor to rubbish waste, resulting in the creation of a major % of methane gas in landfill. Our groups are strongly community-based and create a positive image for businesses. |
What can you do?Do you own or run a café, restaurant, bar or food service?
We run a waste pick-up service to collect businesses discarded coffee grounds. Our service currently runs in the Baw Baw Shire and Latrobe City area, with plans to expand across Gippsland. Our pick-up service is affordable, and is the equivalent to only 1 large coffee a week. If you want to find out more, or if you are interested in signing up, please click the link below. |
What are the positives?
By reusing coffee grounds it can make a significant difference to the volume of organics being recycled rather than a landfill site getting filled. Coffee grounds can provide a valuable source of nutrition for your garden.
They are ideal for deterring slugs from your plants! Most of the acidity in coffee is removed during the brewing process. Coffee grounds can be applied directly as a top dressing to nitrogen-loving plants like azaleas, lettuces, most perennials and allium plants. They smell good. They absorb and hold moisture, which is critical to the compost pile. They are one of the few sources of nitrogen widely available all year round to people in urban and suburban areas. They are easily stored for days in a closed plastic bag. They are available in large quantities. As coffee grounds decompose, they release nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and other minerals that support plant growth. Some examples of plants that thrive in a nitrogen-rich planting area include leafy vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes, corn, roses, camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas. The use of fresh coffee grounds are thought to suppress weeds too. |
